Have a Holly Jolly Chinese Christmas!

(From December 2009)
Merry Christmas, and Happy Hanukkah, Everyone,
We hope the season treats you right.
We are quite surprised to find that China, or at least its major stores are in a Christmas frenzy, almost like back home!  Today we were in a store called RT Mart (not sure what RT signifies, “real things”?), and found the whole store decked out in Christmas gear,

Chinese Christmas check-outs

there was Christmas music playing (most of it in Chinese, if we get the CD we’ll learn how to sing “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer,” “Santa Claus Is Coming To Town.”and “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen” in Chinese…Jingle Bells was in English…and we saw a sales girl who was merrily singing along!), and all the check-out people were wearing Santa hats.

So are Chinese celebrating Christmas now?  We asked our Chinese apartment agent, Lin, if she celebrates Christmas?  She said no.  We guess that China may be jumping on the US Christmas marketing blitz, and want Chinese consumers to get out there and buy, buy, buy!   We noticed a girl taking pictures of the Christmas candy displays.  Downtown we saw a large Christmas tree. (see picture)  People were posing in front of in and having their picture taken.  Of course like many Chinese adaptations there is something a little off…note the crescent moon decorations…crescent moons are usually associated with Muslim culture.  Does anyone have crescent moon decorations?
We find all this pretty baffling as religion has been pretty much out the last 60 years and before that it was Buddhism that predominated.  Christianity has little

foothold here.  The people we work with who worship in church on Sundays, have to show their passports to get in!  The Chinese don’t want any Chinese Nationals sneaking in!  But Christmas, in the name of shopping seems to be acceptable.

The picture of the Deer Store, we are not sure what they are selling…maybe the Chinese are venturing into deer hunting?  Check out the target on the deer!

If Christmas really catches on, can Chinese Hanukkah be far behind?
Happy Holidays To You,
